Aldan's Junior Council Program

What is it?

The Junior Council Program provides an opportunity for High School Juniors and Seniors to join and participate with Council at meetings and present information to Council and the public.

Who can apply?

2026-2027 High School Juniors and Seniors who live in Aldan.

How do I apply?

Download, print, and complete the attached application (below) and submit it to the borough office (E. Providence and N. Clifton) by October 16, 2026. (Printed applications are also available at the Municipal Building during business hours.) Interviews will take place shortly after and the successful applicant will be announced at the November 4th Council Meeting.

How will the Junior Council person be chosen?

All applicants will have their application reviewed and be contacted to arrange an interview with two council members.  We will be looking for someone who is interested in government and wants to help improve Aldan for all its residents!

What are the benefits of participating in the program?

Participating in the application and interviewing process will provide you with great experience.  Demonstrating your commitment to community service at this level looks very good on your job and college applications.  Learning the way local government works is a fascinating introduction to how municipalities work.  You may be able to use the hours for any community service requirement you may have for school.  And you may develop a desire to continue to serve the public as an elected official!

What is my commitment to the position?

Join Council for the Caucus Meeting (first Wednesday of each month) and/or Council Meeting (third Wednesday of each month).  All meetings start at 7:30pm and run about 2 hours.  Both meetings are held in the John P. McBlain Community Center at the end of Shisler Ave.  Prepare and present a short presentation at least every other month on a topic of concern to you and your peers at one of the meetings.

Attend a short monthly meeting with the coordinator to ensure you are learning from the program and are getting the support you need to succeed.  And as this is the FIRST program, you will be helping to suggest improvements to make next year better!

Meet with other Council people who head up committees that interest you and perhaps develop or work on a project that moves that committee’s work forward.  Committees include Finance, Highways, Law and Ordinance, Parks and Recreation, Public Health, Public Safety, and Public Works.  Other possibilities for projects include the Recreation Board, Planning Commission, and the Shade Tree Advisory Committee.  We will work with you to develop a project that fits with your interests and school schedule.

You are also invited to attend any of our special events throughout the year.
