"Free the Trees" Event
FREE THE TREES!
Join the Aldan Tree Tenders Saturday, September 20th for another "Free the Trees" event!
When: Saturday, September 20th, 9am to Noon
Where: Aldan municipal building parking lot
What to bring: Gloves and cutting tools.
Who: All are welcome. No experience necessary!
We're tackling English ivy - an aggressive invasive that's literally suffocating our trees! This evergreen vine prevents trees from leafing out in spring, makes them top-heavy and prone to storm damage, and spreads rapidly through underground roots and bird-dispersed berries.
Why English ivy is such a problem:
- Smothers native plants and kills trees
- Creates erosion-prone slopes with shallow roots
- Grows in deep shade, taking over forest habitats
- Extremely difficult to control once established
Our mission: Cut ivy stems around tree trunks and clear 3-6 foot circles around the base to stop regrowth. The ivy above the cuts will dry up and fall naturally.
This is the 2nd of several planned events - English ivy is tough, but together we can free our trees! Come help us restore our local ecosystem, one tree at a time. Every volunteer makes a difference!
If you have trees on your property you’d like our volunteers to help with, let us know!
